2063_Jo_SpiritedAway

As one of Anime fan for more than 10 years, I’m gonna choose Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi, as known as Spirited Away, a Japanese anime movie by Studio Ghibli, Directed by Hayao Miyazaki, in 20 July 2001. the reason I choose this movie is no other than because I love this movie. Yeah, it’s kinda personal reason, but we start to review some movie because of we like it right?, even though the concept of young girl swept to a fantastical world is certainly not original. We even saw it in Alice in Wonderland. It’s in the Wizard of OZ. in anime perspective, there is Escaflowne, Fushigi Yugi, etc. but Spirited Away seems to stand above the rest. now, what makes this movie important that makes me want to made a review for this movie. Maybe better if I reserve the question, what makes this movie not important?, you see, this movie rated 8.66/10 from 6917 Voter in anidb.net, and even it’s got 8.5/10 from 91662 voters in imdb.com. and not forget it’s also got 8.78/10 from 44853 voter in myanimelist.net, and ranked 18 from all anime from all time in myanimelist.net. it’s even won an oscar, but not only oscar, Spirited Away also win in 35 award, and nominated in 19 more award. It’s even got rank 4 from all the All Anime that you think will never be hated by anyone in Anime-planet.com. This is the first film to earn US$200 million in grosses before opening in the U.S. It’s not a startle for this movie to get so much award, because this movie is so astonishing, and beautifully made, animated, and with beautiful sound, which made this masterpiece.

-Now we’re talking about the special effect, the special effect that used in this anime movie is normal special effect that used in every anime, but with the difference by any means Hayao Miyazaki blends both traditional and digital animation techniques to create breathtaking panoramas, characters and scenes. And like the sentence that I quote from the book behind the Art of Miyazaki’s Spirited Away.” The animators draw in outlines so that the gods immersed in the bath and working women aren’t hidden by the steam. The steam formed with particles is inserted into this outline”, and another quote that explains “with CG it’s easy to create steam and clouds that look real. But that’s not what we were aiming for in Spirited Away. We had the animators draw in those outlines in order to create the images we wanted”, from both two quote from the book, it’s really visible that the special effect that used in the Spirited Away is really one or two level higher level than any anime that comes out at that times, even the special effect is look as the same level with the nowdays anime. Which is really impressive because the movie is still being a comparison for new anime movie. And not to say that Spirited Away using a Limited animation style tecnique, which is still used by nowdays anime. In other means, what I wanna say is that Spirited Away is one of some anime that become the trendsetter for the Limited animation Style. Not to say that Limited animation sytle is still used for now days anime. that’s why Spirited Away is become iconic for the anime in the world. but it’s not that Spirited Away is better that the other studio Ghibli movies, it’s just that they didn’t have Oscar back then, so movie like Hotaru no Haka (Grave of Firefly), or Totoro, or Laputa, etc. doesn’t have time to shine in the western world. so all to this point is, this movie is an astonishing, intoxication, beautiful masterpiece.

-With the direction of Hayao Miyazaki, we seeing this movie from a child eye’s perspective which made this movie more interesting than usual. And thanks to Joe Higashi to composed the beautiful, artistic, and memorable background music for this movie which is perfectly fit to this movie situation. Not saying Hiromasa Yonebayashi, as the key animation, the one who responsible to animation in the movie, made this fabulous beautiful animation, that made this movie look like real, not forget Kazuo Nagai as Background Artist, to made this beautiful environment for this movie, which is really synch with the movie. And even the Voice actor for the movie, if you hear the Japanese voice acting, is almost said to perfect, because the way Rumi Hiiragi, the voice actor of Chihiro, is almost perfect, the expression, the tone, is like a perfect gem.
